Cortinarius rigidus Fr, sensu Kühner & Romagnesi subgenus Telamonia Cap 1.5-4cm across, conic with an acute umbo; hygrophanous, deep red-brown when wet, buffy brown when dry; smooth to fibrillose, the margin coated with silky white fibrils from the veil. Gills adnate; strong bright cinnamon color from the first. Stem 40-80 x 3-5mm, equal; buffy color; fibrillose with distinct patches or bands of white veil remnants. Flesh reddish brown. Odor strong, of household geraniums. Taste distinct. Spores almond-shaped, finely roughened, 7.5-8.5 x 4.5-5.5µ, quotient 1.6. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in coniferous woods. Occasional. Found in the Pacific Northwest and east to Colorado. Season September-October. Not edible. Note interpretation of this species is tricky. |
